NATIONAL POLAR SCIENCE

National Research

Since the International Polar Year 2007-2008, the participation of the national scientific community in the field of polar research has been increasing.

Portuguese researchers have been actively developing activities in polar regions, contributing for an enrichment of the scientific heritage in Portugal.

Science accessible to community

Through numerous projects such as Polar week, CIENTISTA POLAR (Polar Scientist) and Polar Message contest, Portuguese polar scientists have widely publicized their research projects, involving people of various age groups, and making the community aware of the vulnerability of our poles to current and future climate change.

From the Norwegian Polar Institute, we present Philipp Assmy. Philipp has a lot of experience in pelagic ecology, sea ice and biogeochemistry of the Arctic Ocean. He has participated in several interdisciplinary scientific expeditions and in large international research projects, like the Nansen Legacy project, as well as the N-ICE2015 and MOSAiC expeditions.

The XII Workshop APECS Portugal is coming up soon.

It will take place in CIIMAR and registrations are already open.

Pjotr holds a degree in Cultural Anthropology, and later he studied Global Environmental Governance, focusing on analysing polar strategies and other policy concerning the polar regions. As the Project Officer at the European Polar Board Secretariat, Pjotr works on several projects and has organized meetings where researchers exchanged experiences and best practices during COVID-19.

Maria did a bachelor in Biotechnology and a Master in Biological Sciences by the Federal University of Pampa - UNIPAMPA. Currently she is getting her PhD in Biological Sciences at the same university, in collaboration with the Barzilian Antarctic Program (PROANTAR). She is a member of APECS-Brazil since 2016, as part of the executive committee. Maria studies Plant Biotechnology, focusing on bryophytes, salinity, mosses, salt stress and Antarctica.

Irina is a polar meteorologist and climatologist studying the hydrological cycle in polar regions, and how it can be affected by climate change. She participated in expeditions in northern oceans, in the Antarctic Ocean, and in Antarctica. Currently she is part of the Year of Polar Prediction- Southern Hemisphere Task Team.

With a PhD in Biological Sciences by the University of Complutense in Madrid, Andres is interested in ecology of birds in extreme environments and the effects of global changes. Currently, Andres is a senior researcher at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research in the Natural History Museum, Madrid.
